Big fun, small space

Smart wanted to show that its Fortwo model might be small – measuring just 1.5m by 3m, but it was still fun.
The solution was to create “big fun in a small space”. With this in mind, Smart looked for small spaces in which to the world’s smallest online game. Smart placed regular sized banners on many of the top car websites in Germany such as autorevue.at, pointing to a tiny space, measuring just 16 pixels by 16 pixels in the URL bar, where site icons often sit (technical name is the “favicon”). All-time favourite retro video games such as Pacman, Frogger, Moonlander and Pong were placed in the favicon and users could play them using their keyboard.
This campaign follows a number of nifty initiatives from Smart, including a creating a link shortener, and echoes similar moves by car rental service Sixt to make use of the URL bar as an advertising space.
